Shopify pricing: what it really costs
As of 26 September 2026, Shopify's cheapest plan that can run a public online store, Basic, costs $39 a month, or $29 a month billed yearly with the full year charged upfront. A solo seller using Shopify Payments needs nothing more. A small team needs Grow at $105 a month once it wants staff logins, since Basic allows none. A growing team with more than 5 logins needs Advanced at $399 a month. The catch: paying with a payment processor other than Shopify Payments adds a Shopify fee of 2% down to 0.6% of every order, on top of that processor's own fees.

What you will really pay
What a business actually pays for Shopify each month at three sizes, with every line of the bill shown. Built from the prices above as of 26 September 2026; open “How we worked this out” under any total for the assumptions.
Solo store owner, $3,000/mo in sales
$39 / month
high confidence- Basic plan, month-to-month$39
- Shopify transaction fee (none with Shopify Payments)$0
Plan: Basic · billed monthly.
How we worked this out
1 person, the store owner, so Basic's lack of staff accounts doesn't matter. $3,000/mo of online sales paid through Shopify Payments, so Shopify adds no transaction fee; assumes no orders are paid with gift cards or store credit, which stores created on or after May 12, 2025 pay the third-party fee on. Card processing is not summed: at Basic's 2.9% + 30¢ online rate it is about $87 on $3,000 plus 30¢ per order. Themes and apps are excluded. Billed yearly, Basic is $29/mo ($348 upfront). With a third-party payment provider instead of Shopify Payments, Shopify adds 2% of sales: $60/mo on $3,000 (2% × $3,000).
Small team, $30,000/mo in sales, 3 staff accounts
$105 / month
high confidence- Grow plan, month-to-month$105
- Shopify transaction fee (none with Shopify Payments)$0
Plan: Grow · billed monthly.
How we worked this out
5 people, 3 of whom need their own Shopify admin login. Basic allows no staff accounts, so Grow (up to 5) is the cheapest plan that fits. $30,000/mo of online sales through Shopify Payments, so no Shopify transaction fee; assumes no orders are paid with gift cards or store credit, which stores created on or after May 12, 2025 pay the third-party fee on. Card processing is not summed: at Grow's 2.7% + 30¢ online rate it is about $810 on $30,000 plus 30¢ per order. Themes and apps are excluded. Billed yearly, Grow is $79/mo ($948 upfront). With a third-party payment provider, Shopify adds 1% of sales: $300/mo on $30,000 (1% × $30,000).
Growing store, $150,000/mo in sales, 8 staff accounts
$399 / month
high confidence- Advanced plan, month-to-month$399
- Shopify transaction fee (none with Shopify Payments)$0
Plan: Advanced · billed monthly.
How we worked this out
15 people, 8 of whom need their own Shopify admin login. Grow caps staff accounts at 5, so Advanced (up to 15) is required. $150,000/mo of online sales through Shopify Payments, so no Shopify transaction fee; assumes no orders are paid with gift cards or store credit, which stores created on or after May 12, 2025 pay the third-party fee on. Card processing is not summed: at Advanced's 2.5% + 30¢ online rate it is about $3,750 on $150,000 plus 30¢ per order. Themes and apps are excluded. Billed yearly, Advanced is $299/mo ($3,588 upfront). With a third-party payment provider, Shopify adds 0.6% of sales: $900/mo on $150,000 (0.6% × $150,000).
The bills above cover the ordinary case: a store on Shopify Payments, billed month-to-month, with no add-ons. Everything below is what moves that number, in either direction.
Which Shopify plan does a small store actually need?
The decision almost always comes down to staff logins, not how much the store sells. Basic gives only the store owner a login, no staff accounts at all, so it fits a true one-person operation, the case behind the solo bill above. The moment a second person needs their own login to fulfill orders or answer support messages, Grow is the plan: it allows up to 5 staff accounts and is the plan behind the small-team bill above. A team that needs more than 5 logins has to move to Advanced, which allows up to 15; that’s the growing-team bill above. Collaborator accounts given to a freelancer or an agency don’t count against any plan’s staff limit, so hiring outside help to build or run the store doesn’t force an upgrade by itself.
Sales volume matters less, but it isn’t nothing. Shopify’s own help center estimates that for a US store on Shopify Payments, Grow’s lower card rate pays for its higher price at about $200,000 a year in sales, and Advanced’s at about $1,320,000 a year. A fast-growing one-person store can hit that first number well before it ever hires anyone.
What pushes a Shopify store’s bill above the plan price?
The plan price is the floor, not the ceiling. Selling in person and wanting more than casual point-of-sale tools means POS Pro, at $89 per location a month on Basic, Grow or Advanced. Sending text marketing to US or Canadian phone numbers needs a dedicated toll-free number first, at $2.15 a month, on top of a per-message rate. The marketing emails Shopify sends through Shopify Messaging are free up to 10,000 a month on every plan; past that, it’s $1 per 1,000 emails, dropping to $0.65 per 1,000 after 300,000 emails in a month and $0.55 per 1,000 after 750,000.
The biggest lever is payment processing. Skip Shopify Payments for a third-party processor, and Shopify adds its own fee on top of that processor’s own charges: 2% of every order on Basic, 1% on Grow, 0.6% on Advanced. That fee applies to every sale, for as long as the store uses that processor, which makes it the single easiest way to overpay for the plan you’re already on.
Is Shopify’s yearly billing worth it?
Yearly billing cuts the price on Basic, Grow and Advanced by roughly 25%: Basic drops to $29 a month, Grow to $79, and Advanced to $299. The saving comes with a condition worth noticing: yearly billing charges the whole year upfront, so that’s a $348, $948 or $3,588 charge today instead of 12 smaller payments spread out. That trade suits a store that already knows it’s staying and has the cash on hand; a newer store that wants to keep cash free for inventory or ads is often better off paying monthly and giving up the discount. Switching from yearly back to monthly, or downgrading a plan, only takes effect at the end of the current billing cycle.
Plus runs the opposite way. There’s no monthly option at all: only a 1-year term at $2,500 a month, or a 3-year term at $2,300 a month, and the subscription can only be cancelled once that term ends.
What catches merchants off guard after they sign up?
A few rules live only in the help center, not the pricing page. Stores created on or after May 12, 2025 pay the third-party transaction fee on whatever part of an order is paid with a gift card or store credit, even when Shopify Payments handles the rest of that same order. New merchants get Shopify Rewards, a subscription credit worth 1% of Shopify Payments sales for the first 6 months, but cancelling the store forfeits any credit still unused.
Grow includes carrier-calculated shipping only with yearly billing, or for an extra monthly fee that Shopify’s help center doesn’t publish a number for; on monthly billing without that fee, it simply isn’t available. Plan charges themselves are non-refundable, and there’s no setup fee to offset that. Merchants outside the US should expect a different number entirely: Shopify prices Basic, Grow and Advanced in EUR, GBP, INR or USD depending on where the store is located, and every figure on this page is the US list price.
Who should not build on Shopify?
Shopify is built around selling physical or digital products through one admin, and that shows in what doesn’t fit. Course creators whose main product is a course, a membership or coaching are paying for shopping-cart features on plans built around inventory and shipping, not cohorts or drip content; Shopify’s help center describes each plan in terms of products, orders and staff, not lessons. Service businesses that live on bookings and invoices rather than a product catalog are in a similar position.
A store that needs even one employee logged in on the cheapest possible plan should budget for Grow at $105 a month from the start. Basic’s zero-staff-account limit isn’t negotiable, and no add-on removes it.
How does Shopify’s cost stack up against WooCommerce and Webflow?
For a store that just needs to sell, WooCommerce is the closer comparison. Its core plugin has no plan fee at all, and WooCommerce’s own numbers put a comparable small team’s real bill at about $45 a month in hosting, against $105 for Shopify’s Grow plan. The gap is what that money buys: Shopify bundles hosting, checkout, point-of-sale and support behind one login and one bill, while WooCommerce spreads the cost across a host you choose yourself, paid extensions, and whoever keeps WordPress and its plugins updated.
Webflow solves a different problem. It’s built for marketing and content sites with a CMS, and its own ecommerce plans show that: the entry Ecommerce plan caps out at 500 items and adds a 2% fee on top of card processing. A store outgrowing a basic catalog fits Shopify or WooCommerce far better. The full breakdowns are at Shopify vs WooCommerce and Shopify vs Webflow.

Billing rules worth knowing
- Basic, Grow and Advanced cost $39, $105 and $399 a month month-to-month, or $29, $79 and $299 a month billed yearly. Yearly billing charges the full year upfront ($348, $948 and $3,588).
- Shopify Plus has no month-to-month option: it starts at $2,500/mo on a 1-year term or $2,300/mo on a 3-year term, and more complex, higher-volume businesses pay a variable platform fee based on revenue. A Plus subscription can be cancelled when its term commitment expires.
- New stores get a 3-day free trial with no credit card, then $1/month for the first 3 months on Basic, Grow or Advanced, after which the standard price applies. Switching to yearly billing during that promotion starts the annual cycle when the promotion ends, with the full year charged upfront.
- Shopify Rewards (new merchants only): for the first 6 months, 1% back on sales through Shopify Payments (0.5% through other providers) as subscription credits, capped (in USD markets) at $5,000 on Basic, $7,500 on Grow, $10,000 on Advanced and, for Plus through self-serve enrollment, $10,000 or $15,000 (1- or 3-year contract). Credits are lost if you cancel. The scenarios leave these credits out.
- No Shopify transaction fee applies to orders paid through Shopify Payments, Shop Pay, Shop Pay Installments, PayPal Express Checkout or manual methods such as cash on delivery and bank transfer.
- For stores created on or after May 12, 2025, the part of an order paid with gift cards or store credit is charged the plan's third-party transaction fee even when the store uses Shopify Payments. Plus stores that use Shopify Payments as their only provider have these fees waived.
- Staff accounts: Basic allows none (store owner only), Grow up to 5, Advanced up to 15, Plus unlimited. The store owner, collaborator accounts for freelancers and agencies, and POS-only staff don't count toward the limit.
- Third-party carrier-calculated shipping is included on Advanced and Plus. Grow gets it only with yearly billing or for an extra monthly fee; Basic can't activate it.
- Themes and apps are real, variable extra costs: paid themes are one-time purchases, and third-party apps charge their own subscriptions on their own billing cycle. Neither is included in the scenarios.
- There are no setup fees. Plan charges are generally non-refundable. Downgrades, and switches from yearly to monthly billing, take effect at the end of the current billing cycle; the help centre says to contact Shopify Support before the yearly cycle ends to move to monthly billing.
- The Starter and Retail plans are closed to new stores, and merchants who leave either plan can't switch back to it.
- Shopify's own estimate for US stores using Shopify Payments: Grow's lower card rates pay for its higher price at about $200,000 a year in sales, and Advanced's at about $1,320,000 a year.
- Grow is the plan previously named Shopify; the rename is noted in Shopify's developer changelog.

Automated re-check on : all 12 prices we re-read were still on Shopify's pages.
- Starter plan price: Shopify's current pricing page no longer lists Starter, shopify.com/starter now redirects to the free-trial offer, and the help centre says Starter isn't available to new stores. No captured Shopify page shows its price, so it is not listed.
- Retail plan price: the plan is closed to new stores and no captured Shopify page shows its price.
- The monthly fee for adding carrier-calculated shipping to a Grow plan billed monthly is not published; the help centre only says it costs an additional monthly fee.
- The Advanced tax platform is marked as an add-on on every plan, with no price on the pricing page.
- Shopify Plus: the variable platform fee for complex businesses is quote-only, non-US card rates require contacting sales, and Shopify's pages differ on how the Plus term is paid (the pricing page's comparison table puts 'Starts at $2,300 USD/mo' in its Pay monthly row and marks Pay yearly as not included, while shopify.com/about shows $2,300 'billed yearly' on a 3-year term). We list the 1-year term price in the annual column because every Plus option carries at least a 1-year commitment. The terms behind the pricing page's 'Try for $399' Plus button were not captured.
- The pricing page does not define which cards count as premium cards for the higher online rate.
- Domain registration and paid theme prices vary and were not captured.

Frequently asked questions
How much does Shopify cost per month?
Shopify has four paid store plans, month-to-month with no contract: Basic at $39, Grow at $105, Advanced at $399, and Plus, which has no monthly option and instead starts at $2,500 a month on a 1-year term. Billing yearly instead of monthly lowers Basic to $29, Grow to $79 and Advanced to $299 a month, charged as one payment for the full year. There is also a free Agentic plan at $0 a month, but it cannot publish a public online store or take checkout orders; it only lists products for AI shopping channels and Shopify's own Shop app. Most solo sellers start on Basic, and a store needs Grow once a second person needs a staff login.
Is there a free version of Shopify?
Not for running a public store. Shopify's free plan, Agentic, costs $0 a month and only puts a store's products into Shopify Catalog for AI chat assistants and the Shop app; the online store itself stays password-protected until the merchant upgrades to a paid plan, and it cannot take orders through its own checkout. Every plan that can publish a live store and accept checkout orders carries a subscription fee, starting with Basic at $39 a month. New stores do get a 3-day free trial with no credit card, and after that Shopify charges $1 a month for the first 3 months on Basic, Grow or Advanced before the standard price applies.
Does Shopify charge a transaction fee?
Only if a store's checkout does not use Shopify Payments. Pay with a third-party processor instead, and Shopify adds its own fee on top of that processor's charges: 2% of the order on Basic, 1% on Grow, 0.6% on Advanced, and 0.2% on Plus, where it is waived if Shopify Payments is the store's only payment method. That fee never applies to orders paid through Shopify Payments, Shop Pay, Shop Pay Installments, PayPal Express Checkout or manual methods like cash on delivery. For stores created on or after May 12, 2025, there is one exception even with Shopify Payments turned on: the part of an order paid with a gift card or store credit still gets charged the plan's third-party rate.
How much does Shopify Plus cost?
Shopify Plus has no month-to-month billing. It starts at $2,500 a month on a 1-year term, or $2,300 a month on a 3-year term, per Shopify's Plus pricing FAQ. Merchants with more complex or higher-volume operations can instead be quoted a variable platform fee based on revenue, a figure that comes only from Shopify's sales team. Plus also gets its own lower online card rate, 2.25% plus 30 cents with Shopify Payments in the US, and a lower third-party-processor fee of 0.2% of each order, which is waived entirely when Shopify Payments is the store's only payment provider. A Plus subscription can be cancelled once its term commitment ends, not before.
Is it cheaper to pay for Shopify monthly or yearly?
Yearly billing is about 25% cheaper on every plan that offers it. Basic drops from $39 to $29 a month, Grow from $105 to $79, and Advanced from $399 to $299. The saving comes with a condition: yearly billing charges the entire year in one payment, so those become a $348, $948 or $3,588 charge upfront instead of 12 smaller ones. A store that is confident it is staying and has the cash on hand should take the yearly price; one that wants to keep cash free for inventory, ads or a slow month is often better off paying monthly and giving up the discount. Switching from yearly to monthly only takes effect at the end of the current billing cycle.
What happens after the Shopify free trial ends?
Shopify's free trial runs 3 days and needs no credit card to start. After that, new stores that choose Basic, Grow or Advanced pay a discounted $1 a month for the first 3 months before the plan's standard price takes over; Plus and the free Agentic plan are not part of that offer. Nothing about the trial length or the $1 offer changes which plan fits: a solo seller still wants Basic, and a store with staff logins still wants Grow or Advanced once trial pricing ends. Downgrading, upgrading or switching billing frequency afterward takes effect at the end of the current billing cycle, and Shopify does not refund plan charges already paid.
How many staff accounts come with each Shopify plan?
Basic includes none at all: only the store owner has a login, so a single employee forces an upgrade. Grow allows up to 5 staff accounts, and Advanced up to 15; Plus has no staff limit. None of these limits count the store owner's own account, collaborator accounts given to freelancers or an agency, or POS-only staff, so bringing in outside help to build the store does not use up a staff slot. For a small team, that makes Grow at $105 a month the practical floor the moment a second person needs to log in and manage orders, not Basic's $39.
