Notion pricing: what it really costs

Quick answer

As of 27 September 2026, Notion prices seats at $0 on Free, $12 a month per member on Plus, and $24 on Business, each about 16.7% less if billed yearly. A one-person workspace can stay on Free indefinitely, since its page and block limits only apply once a second member joins, at a cap Notion doesn't publish. A 5-person agency or a 15-person startup both fit comfortably on Plus; Business, at $24 a member, only pays off once the team wants full Notion AI, SAML SSO or private teamspaces. Enterprise pricing is quote-only.

Solo

Solo: 1 seat

$0 / month

high confidence
  • Free plan, 1 member$0

Plan: Free · billed monthly.

How we worked this out

Organize layer, solo = 1 seat. In a one-person workspace Free's pages and blocks are 'Unlimited for individuals', so the 2+ member limit doesn't apply. Free has no charge, so there is no billing cycle to choose. The 7-day page history, 5 MB upload cap and 'Limited Trial' of Notion AI are the likely reasons to upgrade; Plus is $12/mo month-to-month ($10/mo billed yearly).

Small team

Small team: 5 seats

$60 / month

high confidence
  • Plus plan, 5 members x $12/member/month$60

Plan: Plus · billed monthly.

How we worked this out

Organize layer, small = 5 seats. Free's pages and blocks become 'limited' once a workspace has 2+ members, and Notion doesn't publish the cap, so a 5-person team is priced on Plus, the cheapest paid plan with unlimited blocks. Month-to-month: 5 × $12/member = $60. Billed yearly the same 5 seats are 5 × $10 = $50/mo. Business (5 × $24 = $120/mo month-to-month) is needed only for full Notion AI, SAML SSO, private teamspaces or Custom Agents.

Growing team

Growing team: 15 seats

$180 / month

high confidence
  • Plus plan, 15 members × $12/member/month$180

Plan: Plus · billed monthly.

How we worked this out

Organize layer, growing = 15 seats. Plus has no published seat cap and unlimited pages, blocks, file uploads and guests, so no plan limit forces a move to Business at 15 people. Month-to-month: 15 × $12/member = $180. Billed yearly: 15 × $10 = $150/mo. If the team needs full Notion AI (Agent, Meeting Notes, Enterprise Search), SAML SSO, private teamspaces or 90-day page history, Business is 15 × $24 = $360/mo month-to-month or 15 × $20 = $300/mo billed yearly, plus Notion credits for any Custom Agents.

Does a one-person Notion workspace ever need to pay?

Not on price alone. Notion’s Free plan gives a single-member workspace unlimited pages and blocks, and the $0 scenario above reflects exactly that: one seat, no charge, no billing cycle to manage. Notion pitches Free as being for “individuals to organize personal projects and life,” and at that size its real limits sit elsewhere: 5 MB per file upload, 7-day page history, up to 10 external guests, and only a “Limited Trial” of Notion AI.

The moment a workspace adds a second member, pages and blocks become “limited,” and Notion never publishes the number. Inviting a guest to comment on a document doesn’t trigger this, since guests aren’t counted as members; adding a co-founder, a virtual assistant or a second freelancer does. A solo operator about to bring someone else into the workspace should plan on paying $12 a month per member from that point, rather than waiting to hit an unpublished wall.

Which plan does a 5-person or 15-person team actually need?

Both the small-team and growing-team bills above land on the same plan: $60 for 5 seats and $180 for 15 seats are each priced on Plus, at $12 a month per member. Plus carries no published seat ceiling, and because pages, blocks, file uploads and guest invitations are all unlimited there, nothing about growing from 5 people to 15 forces a move to Business by itself.

Business, at $24 a member, earns its price only when the team needs something Plus flatly doesn’t offer: Notion Agent, AI Meeting Notes, Enterprise Search, SAML SSO, private teamspaces, or 90 days of page history instead of Plus’s 30. That’s a real fit for an agency running client teamspaces that must stay invisible to each other’s staff, a SaaS startup that wants AI search across its own documentation, or any workspace ready to rely on Notion AI rather than trial it. Everyone else is paying for a badge: Notion marks Business “Recommended” on its own pricing page, which is a marketing default, not a sizing verdict for any one team.

What actually pushes a Notion bill above the seat price?

Two things, and both sit above Plus. Custom Agents and Workers, available only on Business and Enterprise, run on Notion credits billed at $10 per 1,000 credits a month, and the pricing page never says how many credits the free trial includes or how many a typical agent run burns through. A team planning to lean on Custom Agents should treat that line as an open question, not a rounding error, until it has run one inside its own workspace.

Publishing a Notion site on a custom domain also costs extra, on Plus and up, billed “per domain” with no amount shown anywhere on the pricing page. Neither charge touches a workspace that sticks to docs, databases, forms and internal collaboration, which covers most of what the plans above are priced for.

Is Notion’s yearly discount as good as it advertises?

Notion’s pricing page opens on the yearly view and says “Save up to 20% with yearly.” The seat rates it actually publishes work out to about 16.7% off: Plus runs $10 a member billed yearly against $12 month-to-month, and Business runs $20 against $24. Twenty percent is the ceiling Notion advertises, not the rate most teams will actually get.

The bigger catch is what yearly billing does to a shrinking team. Once a paid seat is added, Notion keeps billing it for the rest of the current billing period even if that person leaves the next day, and on an annual plan the “rest of the period” can be most of a year. A workspace expecting to add and drop contractors, or unsure of its headcount in six months, is safer paying monthly until it settles, then locking in the annual rate once the seat count is stable.

What does Notion’s pricing page leave you to find out the hard way?

A handful of numbers that matter never make it onto the page. The exact page-and-block cap that kicks in once a workspace passes one member isn’t published, only described as “limited.” The free trial of Notion AI on Free and Plus has no stated length or usage cap. Custom Agents get a free trial of unstated size before the credit meter starts. And the currency selector on the pricing page suggests Notion prices by region, but only the US-locale USD prices have been checked as of , so whether a team billing from another country pays the same rate is unconfirmed.

None of that changes what a US-billed team pays today. It does mean a workspace planning to push hard on Notion AI or Custom Agents before upgrading, or one billing from outside the US, is working with real gaps in what Notion discloses up front.

Notion or ClickUp for a small team’s docs and projects?

ClickUp sits in the same spot as Notion: a per-member workspace for projects and docs, priced on its own Free, Unlimited, Business and Enterprise plans. At 5 seats, ClickUp’s bill is $50, a little below Notion’s $60, because ClickUp’s Unlimited plan runs $10 a seat against Notion Plus’s $12. The trade-off runs the other way once a team leans on dashboards or automation: ClickUp’s Unlimited plan caps Dashboards, Timeline and Workload views at 100 uses per workspace that never reset, a ceiling Notion’s plans simply don’t have.

A team that mainly writes, plans and shares documents fits Notion’s model more naturally. A team that lives in Gantt charts, automations and dashboards should read the full Notion vs ClickUp comparison before picking either one, since the two price and cap very different things.

Billing rules worth knowing

  • Prices are per member per month. The pricing page opens on yearly billing and says 'Save up to 20% with yearly', but Plus and Business are about 16.7% cheaper billed yearly ($10 vs $12 and $20 vs $24).
  • Guests are free of charge but can only open the individual pages they're invited to; they can't see the team pages under Teamspaces in the sidebar.
  • A paid seat is a license for one member. A new member takes an existing unused paid seat if there is one; otherwise the paid-seat count goes up by 1. Removing a member frees a seat that can be reused at no extra cost.
  • Once a paid seat is added you keep it (and pay for it) for the rest of the billing period. Seats added mid-cycle are charged pro rata, and those charges are invoiced on the day of the month you first subscribed.
  • At each renewal (monthly or yearly) the paid-seat count is reset to the number of members in the workspace, and you're charged the plan price times that count plus any prorated charges for seats added in the past month.
  • Upgrading is charged immediately, reduced by the share of the billing cycle already used. Downgrading takes effect at the end of the current billing cycle.
  • Monthly and yearly subscriptions renew automatically until cancelled. After cancelling, paid features stay active until the end of the billing cycle.

How we checked this

Notion: Read from Notion's pricing page in a US-locale headless browser: the default view (Pay yearly selected), the page after clicking 'Pay monthly', the billing FAQ answers expanded, and a DOM extract of the plan-comparison table that keeps each cell in its plan column; snapshots saved. Last verified . Prices are US list prices in USD.

Automated re-check on : all 1 prices we re-read were still on Notion's pages.

What we could not verify:
  • Free's exact page/block cap once a workspace has 2 or more members isn't given as a number on the pricing page (it only says 'limited').
  • How many Notion credits the Custom Agents free trial includes, and how many credits a typical agent task uses, isn't stated on the pricing page, so a monthly credit bill can't be estimated.
  • The 'Trial of Notion AI' on Free and Plus has no stated length or usage cap on the pricing page.
  • The price of a custom domain for a Notion site ('Pay per domain') isn't shown on the pricing page.
  • Prices outside a US locale and in currencies other than USD were not checked, although the page has a currency selector.

Frequently asked questions

How much does Notion cost per user?

Notion charges per member, not a flat team price. Free costs $0 a month and covers a one-person workspace fully, though pages and blocks become limited once a second member joins, at a cap Notion doesn't publish. Plus costs $12 a member per month billed monthly, or $10 billed yearly, and removes the file-upload cap while extending page history to 30 days. Business costs $24 a member per month billed monthly, or $20 billed yearly, and adds Notion Agent, AI Meeting Notes, Enterprise Search, SAML SSO and private teamspaces. Enterprise has no published price; Notion requires contacting sales for a quote. A 5-person team on Plus, billed monthly, pays $60 a month in total, which is the plan most small teams actually land on.

Is Notion actually free for a small team, or does the free plan run out fast?

It runs out immediately for a team, not slowly. Notion's Free plan gives one person unlimited pages and blocks at $0 a month, but the instant a workspace has two or more members, pages and blocks become "limited" by an amount Notion has never published on its pricing page. Free also caps file uploads at 5 MB each, keeps only 7 days of page history, allows up to 10 external guests, and includes just a "Limited Trial" of Notion Agent, Meeting Notes and Research mode rather than the real thing. For an actual team of any size, that combination pushes most workspaces onto Plus at $12 a member per month ($10 billed yearly) within days of adding a second person, not months.

What happens to the bill when a Notion workspace adds or removes members mid-cycle?

Notion treats a paid seat as a license for one member, not a fixed batch bought up front. Add a new member to a $12-a-member Plus workspace and Notion either hands them an existing unused paid seat or increases the paid-seat count by one; that new seat is billed pro rata for the days left in the current billing period, invoiced on the date each month or year the workspace first subscribed. Remove a member and the seat they used stays open and paid for until the current period ends, though it's free for the next new hire to reuse. At each renewal, monthly or yearly, Notion resets the paid-seat count to match the members actually in the workspace and bills the plan price times that count. Upgrading is charged immediately, prorated for time already used; downgrading waits until the next renewal.

Does Notion's yearly billing actually save 20%?

Not quite, though it's close. Notion's pricing page advertises "Save up to 20% with yearly," but the seat rates it publishes work out to about 16.7% off: Plus is $10 a member per month billed yearly against $12 billed monthly, and Business is $20 a member billed yearly against $24 billed monthly. Twenty percent is the best case Notion advertises, not what Plus or Business customers actually get. Yearly billing is still worth it for a team whose headcount is stable, since $10 or $20 a member beats $12 or $24. It's a weaker deal for a team that expects to shrink: a paid seat stays on the bill for the rest of the period it was added in, even if that person leaves right away, and on an annual plan that period can run most of a year instead of a month.

Does Notion charge extra for its AI features?

Yes, above Plus. Free and Plus include only a "Limited Trial" of Notion Agent, AI Meeting Notes and Research mode, not ongoing access. Business and Enterprise include full Notion Agent, AI Meeting Notes and Enterprise Search inside the $24 and custom seat prices. Custom Agents and Workers, a separate beta feature, are available only on Business and Enterprise and bill separately in Notion credits at $10 per 1,000 credits a month after a free trial. Notion's pricing page doesn't say how many credits that trial includes or how many credits a typical agent task uses, so a workspace planning to run Custom Agents regularly should expect a credit bill on top of its $24-a-member Business seats, without being able to estimate it in advance from the pricing page alone.

Does Notion offer a free trial of Plus or Business?

Not in the usual sense. Notion's pricing page doesn't describe a time-limited free trial of the paid Plus or Business plans the way many competitors do; there's no stated number of trial days before a card is required. What it does offer is narrower: the Free and Plus plan cards list a "Trial of Notion AI," and Notion's comparison table marks Notion Agent, Meeting Notes and Research mode as "Limited Trial" on those two plans, with no stated length or usage cap. Custom Agents, a Business and Enterprise feature, are "free to try, then $10 per 1,000 monthly Notion credits," again with no published trial size. In practice, a team can use Free indefinitely at $0 to evaluate the core product, then pay for Plus at $12 a member per month to get what a time-boxed trial would normally cover.

Does Notion offer a student or education discount?

Yes, separately from the four plans on its main pricing page. Notion's help centre describes a free Education Plan for students, teachers and staff at accredited colleges and universities who verify with a school email address; it covers a single-member workspace with unlimited pages, blocks and file uploads plus 30 days of page history, at no charge, and needs re-verification each year. A separate track lets student organizations at approved schools add their whole membership to one workspace for free, rather than paying Notion's normal $12-a-member Plus rate. Neither program applies to a business, a freelancer or an agency: those buyers are priced on Free, Plus, Business or Enterprise like any other workspace, at Notion's standard $0, $12 and $24 seat rates.

Are guests free on Notion, and what can they see?

Guests cost nothing on every plan, but they see very little. Free allows up to 10 external guests, while Plus and Business both allow an unlimited number, and none of that counts toward the per-member seat price of $12 or $24 a month. The trade-off is access: a guest can only open the individual pages someone has directly invited them to, and can't see the team pages listed under Teamspaces in the sidebar, even as a guest on the same workspace as a full member. That makes guests a reasonable way to loop in a freelance client or a contractor for one document without paying for another seat, but a poor substitute for a real member if that person needs to browse the workspace the way an employee would.
